Wonder Woman

I was reading about how J. Michael Straczynski is going to be re-inventing (yet again) Wonder Woman for DC Comics, with Jim Lee redesigning the costume. Frankly, I think the best Wonder Woman we've seen in decades came from Darwin Cooke in The New Frontier. (I thought it was great that Cooke made her taller than Superman.) I get a little tired of Adam Hughes' et alia cheesecake drawings of Wonder Woman.

I thought I'd work up something representing the 1940s Amazonian princess. It's an Unfinished Work-in-Progress, mostly because I always reach a point where I don't know how to finish a painting. I reckon someday I'll take some classes. This was painted in ArtRage2 and I used Francis Gifford as a reference.

I touched it up a little bit. It had looked like she had a sunburn.

MLK

My attempt at painting Martin Luther King, Jr.
Painting in color while working from a black & white photo can be a little difficult. Done in ArtRage2. I like the way Art Rage has a "reference" option, which allows you to have a reference photo on screen. Still, getting a good likeness is not my strong suit.
I kinda like the way the colors turned out. I tried to put in a hint of movement. I feel like I should have cropped it around the middle of the left hand, as that hand seems to have become the focal point. Or maybe it should be darkened, more shadowy.
I always run across some issue that I just don't know how to solve.
At any rate, Brother Martin rocked!

Incredible Hulk

Just saw the trailer for the Incredible Hulk. No goose bumps, no heart palpations, no holding of breath. Not impressed. I had high hopes for it.

Now, Iron Man. Yes! It is gonna rock. And Hancock looks pretty darn good, too. Batman... ehhh... yes, we know Batman is dark and brooding. So let's make the whole thing sick, depressing, dark and brooding.

Word is, development has begun on Bone. It will either be the Movie of the Decade or the next Casper the Friendly Ghost.

Ship at Sea

This is my 30-minute digital painting for today. This time I thought I would use a reference, but I ended up just outright copying a great painting I found. I don't know who the artist is. This is the painting that I tried to duplicate: Spirit of Albion  UPDATE, July 12, 2010: The original link disappeared, but I finally discovered the artist of the painting I copied. It is by Mark Myers, Royal Society of Marine Artists. It is titled Wanderers: The Joseph Conrad in the Southern Ocean.
More work by Mark Myers.

Viking

I finally went out and got a Wacom tablet. Did a little doodling and then tried something a little more painterly. This was supposed to be a pirate, but turned into a viking after a while. I think it took about an hour, in Photoshop.

Process

For those who might be interested, this shows the process of digitally painting the Face that I posted a couple months ago. You may notice that the position of the eyes was adjusted, something that I couldn't have done on paper.
I tried doing what I see several very good digital artists do... first lay out three colors for shadow, highlight and midtone, and work from there. That didn't work very well for me. It probably would have if I had used a reference instead of just making it up as I went along... or more likely, it's just a skill I need to work on.
I picked up a tablet pc on the cheap on ebay which needs fixing. I'm not sure whether it will be worth it or not, but we'll see. I'm just gonna bust if I don't get one soon, though.
